The house
Kaduru House was a fisherman's plot until 2017. We kept the well, the boundary wall and the old kaduru tree it is named for, and built six rooms around them — polished cement, teak salvaged from a Galle warehouse, and windows placed where the light lands rather than where the plan said.
There is no restaurant. There is a long table under the fig, and Nilanthi cooks for whoever is sitting at it. Breakfast is included and appears around eight. Dinner is a question she asks in the afternoon.
It is small on purpose. Twelve guests at capacity means the tuk-tuk driver knows your name by the second morning, and the whale boat leaves when you are ready rather than when the tour bus is full.
